Get Fit, Do Good. The FitRev Games.

Join us on Friday March 24th from 6:00 – 7:30 PM for The FitRev Games, a combination of three of your favorite classes (Fit Ride, Tabata & Fit Cross) in one super-challenging workout ALL FOR A GREAT CAUSE!  This time around 100{92744473441628ad373e5594fb1f7300da9eccde7b9b005da5899a2b1d424281} of the funds we raise will go toward brain cancer research.

This cause is dear to Fit Revolution as our good friend and fellow FitRev member, Kate Tiberio and her husband, Mike, continue to brave his brain cancer diagnosis with an undeniable amount of perseverance and grace.  Last year, our FitRev Games helped raise over $50,000 for brain cancer research spearheaded by Mike’s physician, Dr. David Reardon, Clinical Director for the Center for Neuro-Oncology at Dana-Farber.

Read Kate & Mike’s story below.

In July of 2009, life as we knew it changed forever when Mike was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Since the diagnosis, every option in the Standard of Care “playbook” has been tried, with no beneficial results – only undesirable side effects.

Despite a series of surgeries and 6 years of standard-of-care treatment, the tumor continued to grow, and crossed over from the right hemisphere of his brain to the left side, and then began to reach deeper down into the brain. Mike was working through daily seizures and other physical and mental effects, trying to continue working and to be a “typical” father to his 2 young boys. But, the accumulating physical and mental deficits left no choice but to stop the treatments and undergo another risky surgery. We hoped that “de-bulking” the largest of the tumors would allow Mike to continue working and slow the overall progress of the disease. The most aggressive mode of treatment was a combination of radiation and high-dose chemotherapy. But, the standard treatments were once again proven to be ineffective, making it clear that the only hope would be to find something outside of the usual protocol.

Fortunately, Mike is being treated by Dr. David Reardon at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Dr. Reardon is not only a great clinician, he is also a world-class researcher, and accepted Mike into one of the very few clinical trials available. After a year on the trial drug, the tumors have stopped growing and Mike is making progress in recovering his physical and mental abilities. Though the disease has only stalled, we are elated. This is the first time since 2009 that the tumors have stopped growing. We finally have our first bit of good news!

This would NOT be the case if it were not for the clinical trial, and this is where our fundraiser makes a difference. There is very little funding to support clinical trials and research to fight brain cancer. There are over 700,000 people living with brain cancer in the United States today, and another 78,000 people are expected to be diagnosed with PRIMARY brain cancer this year, and 4,000 of them will be children! New drugs and new techniques are urgently needed to defeat or prevent brain cancer.

Last year, we raised over $50,000 for Dr. Reardon’s research. Brain cancer treatments can also be effective against other forms of cancer, but the opposite is not true. This is due to the blood/brain barrier, which prevents most cancer treatments from entering the brain. Progress is slowed by financial limitations, but fundraisers like this begin to remove the roadblocks on the road to a cure. Your contributions make a meaningful difference in the race against all types of cancer and help to unlock the full power of research at DFCI.

We are deeply appreciative of our friends at Fit Revolution who have designed a fun and healthy way to support Dr. Reardon’s game-changing work. FitRev is generously donating all proceeds to Dr. Reardon’s research efforts at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
